Short SOMMA today because it’s a slow news in MMA week, maybe it’ll pick up as the days go on.
I’m so glad this season of TUF is over, and this will be the last time Spike has me this hyped about The Ultimate Fighter ever again. There was absolutely zero, and I repeat ZERO payoff for sticking with this season. Rampage didn’t fight Rashad, Kimbo didn’t knock anyone out and Roy Nelson was the least exciting winner we’ve ever seen. Then they decide to follow it up by saying next season’s coaches are older and slower than we’ve ever seen before in Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.
This would give me motivation to quit the UFC and start watching Strikeforce except that Strikeforce is only signing old legends for a lot more than they’re worth. In about a year a lot of people are going to see that Dana White was correct in not giving Hendo what he wanted. First of all Dan Henderson is old, and not the kind of old that makes you a legend like Randy Couture. (who incidentally is 1-2 since his return to MMA for those who are keeping track) Henderson is Chuck Liddell old, he’s the type of old that says just because I haven’t been knocked out a lot recently doesn’t mean that I can’t start. Now I admit Henderson is looking a lot better than Chuck in his recent fights in his old age however I think his days of walking through top competition are behind him. I’m kind of disappointed that his contract is taking so long to get squared away as now he hasn’t fought since July. I would’ve liked to have seen how he fared against Nate Marquardt to get a true barometer of where his skill is but perhaps this means Strikeforce will give him an immediate title shot against Mousasi, or Shields. He says he wants to fight Fedor but I hope for his sake that this doesn’t happen. Please remember this is the guy that barely defeated Rich Franklin. This is quite a jump in competition.
So this weekend we have battle of the craziest sound bites between Diego Sanchez and BJ Penn. I’ve come to the conclusion that the things Sanchez says makes Penn actually sound sane when he interviews. Anyways I’ll break down selected fights from that card later this week.

I would like everyone to take a moment and think about how great it would be if Rampage and Rashad were fighting next weekend.
*moment*
I had actually at one point had even forgot they were on the show. Can you even think about how far this season has come? I mean that in the most negative way possible. Do you remember the hype this show had starting way back in April when Kimbo was first announced to be a contestant on the show?
What has happened since then?
The grudge match of the century was postponed then cancelled. Rampage retired. . Roy Nelson crucified our Kimbo pipe dream. We realized that heavyweight actually means old, fat, and slow, which led to the worst season of fights in recent TUF history. Even the “drama” was whack, I actually applaud Matt Mitrione for making the season at least a little more exciting. If it weren’t for him and Rashad and Rampage fighting every two minutes this season would’ve been a bigger yawnfest than the British season.
Anyways in the first hour of this two part finale there were two fights. In the first we saw an apprehensive Matt Mitrione get submitted with a guillotine choke by James McSweeney. In the second fight we see another outstanding performance on the ground from Marcus Jones as he knocked out Darrill “Titties” Schoonover with heavy handed ground and pound.
At the end of the first hour the semi final fights were announced and I was looking forward to seeing Roy Nelson get beat up by James McSweeney.
However in the second hour James McSweeney became a complete and utter prick after picking on Zak Jensen and I actually became a Roy Nelson fan. So I was actually happy to see Roy get the win against McSweeney in what looked like his most impressive win of the season. He was able to rock McSweeney then get him to the ground in a bad position and rock some serious shots in the crucifix position. All in all it was a solid win for him to make it to the finals.
Brendan Schaub was the second fighter to make it to the finals with a big win over a big man in Marcus “The Darkness” Jones. Schaub was in trouble early after being in the side control of the obviously larger man in Jones. However after escaping the ground and bringing the fight back to his feet, Schaub was able to knockout Jones on the ground. Eerily similar and Jones’ win over Schoonover earlier in the episode.
So the Final matchups are set with Nelson vs. Schaub. In addition we’re also going to see Mitrione/Jones, Schoonover/McSweeney, Madsen/Wren and Kimbo Slice vs. Houston Alexander. I think that Demico Rogers kind of got shafted in these match-ups as he’s the only talented person left who’s not on the Finale card at this time however I’m sure we’ll see him again.
Be sure to tune in this weekend, I have a feeling it’s going to be a good set of fights………or it could just be more of the Hype that Spike has been setting us up with all year long.

So I got the cable hooked up in my new place just in time to see Tony Romo lead the Cowboys to the game winning drive against the Washington Redskins. That made my day. What didn’t make my day was trying to view the fights on Saturday renegade style due to a series of unfortunate circumstances. Anyways I was right on some accounts and wrong on others for UFC 106 but let’s get into it now.
UFC 106 Key Points
The welterweight title picture is a mess. Since the UFC probably expected Koshchek to lose to Johnson (as did I) they had no reason to think that Hardy would be anything other than the number one contender come the end of Saturday night. However Koshchek threw a monkey wrench into those plans simply by winning impressively over Johnson. If Johnson would’ve won this would’ve been an easy set-up for a fight with Jon Fitch with the winner facing the winner of GSP/Hardy. This was not the case. It would’ve been easier to say that Johnson is not ready for a title shot but it’s difficult to say with his latest track record that Koshchek doesn’t deserve a shot at the belt. Now as I said last week we have several number one contenders for the welterweight division. We’ve got Jon Fitch, Josh Koshchek, and Dan Hardy, in the order that I just mentioned them.
So where do we go from here? I think at this point teammates have to start fighting each other they can’t all be good and not expect to meet each other at some point. That’s a jaded way of thinking. If you want to be the best and you don’t want to fight your friends then stay out of their weight class. That being said Fitch/ Koshchek on the GSP/Hardy card with the winners facing each other and if people stay injury free this should work itself out. If Koshchek doesn’t want to fight Fitch then give the deal to Johnson then we’ve got Johnson/Fitch on the GSP/Hardy card and once again this works itself.
As for the rest of UFC 106…..
Noigueira just send a serious message to the UFC Light-Heavyweight division while at the same time dismantling one who was supposed to be a top contender in the division. I smell Vera/Nogueira coming up in the near future.
Sotiropoulos will probably be fighting a real contender his next time in the octagon just to see if his streak of 4-0 inside the UFC has been a fluke. If he wins again the buzz will be loud and fast for him to get a top contender and maybe even title shot buzz. However he’s in a very stacked division and this could work to his disadvantage.
Folks you heard it here first, Kendall Grove is about to be on a winning streak in the middleweight division. This was the boost he needed over a quality opponent to put together a string of wins to make his title run. Stay tuned.
Ben Saunders should just go ahead and ask for a rematch with Mike Swick. Beating Davis doesn’t do much for him until he beats a top contender, not a gatekeeper like Davis. (I love Marcus Davis don’t get me wrong but he is turning out to be a gatekeeper)
Sadollah fans can breathe a sigh of relief he has an impressive win under his belt now. We’ll see now if he can build on this win. If I were him I’d ask for another fight to stay active.
Finally we’ll end with Mr. Ortiz and Mr. Griffin. Personally I think this fight does nothing for either of them. A loss did nothing for Tito and a split decision win over Ortiz does nothing to convince me that Forrest is back. If I’m Griffin I’m already looking for another fight against a legit opponent in order to get myself back on track. Think about it, a year ago this time Griffin was the light heavyweight champion it’s time to get back to those days.
Alright so besides UFC 106 it’s been a pretty slow week in MMA, much love to Brock Lesnar hope you get better man.
Holler.

I’m a little upset that there’s a possibility I might miss my third MMA show in a row. I missed UFC 105, WEC 44 and now it’s starting to look like getting out to see UFC 106 is going to be a bit of a stretch for me to see. Most of you know that I moved recently and the day before I moved I wrecked my car. Ugh and Double ugh! So I have no cable and no car, however if there’s a way to see this card I will find it. I love MMA and missing events is really bothering me.
That being said I’m going to keep these predictions short and sweet and my reasoning is two-fold. One I don’t want to dwell on it if I’m not going to be able to see the fights. Two, awww who am I kidding, I’m just being sour grapes. Is anyone in Northern VA ordering the fights?
Also if Dustin Hazelett would’ve fought, I would’ve had four of my favorite welterweight fighters to watch with him Johnson, Koshchek and Davis all fighting. However I like that he’s not fighting this gives him more time to be even more 100% the next time he’s in the ring.
Now despite the fact that the UFC has lost the Heavyweight title match that was supposed to be on this card, this is a stacked card for those of you who keep track of MMA starting with the Spike show.
ON Spike!
Kendall Grove vs. Jake Rosholt
Middleweight non-title bout

Grove by decision or round 2 submission
Grove is Desperate for a win his job may be on the line, this fight will be the first of a streak of wins for him.
Ben Saunders vs. Marcus Davis
Welterweight non title bout

Marcus Davis by KO round 1 or decision
Davis is hungry after being slighted by the judges in the Hardy fight he’s not going to want to leave another one to the judges. If he’s caught in the thai clench with Saunders he’ll dirty box his way out. This will be a tough fight but he will rise to the challenge.
Main Card
Amir Sadollah vs. Phil Baroni
Welterweight non title bout

Sadollah by split decision or submission
This will be a good fight, with both fighters looking to impress the UFC brass after suffering tough losses in their last outings respectively. However I think Sadollah should be the more tempered fighter and if he stays relaxed in the cage should be able to pick Baroni apart much like Joe riggs did. Baroni will win a round possibly on aggression and octagon control. Sadollah could end the fight with a submission which with the judging recently in MMA is a safe bet for him.
Luiz Cane vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
Light-Heavyweight non-title bout

Nogueira by unanimous decision or round 2 TKO
For those of you who don’t know Lil Nog. He beat Allastair Ubereem twice. However Luis Cane TKO’d Soduku (Sokoudjou) who KO’d Lil Nog. Bottom line this is going to be a good fight. Nogueira is bearing a little more of a chip on his shoulder as he was the twin who wasn’t picked to come to UFC with his brother initially. Also his fight experience and more notably his boxing experience will give him the slight edge over Cane as Steve Cantwell has strong stand up and was able to give Cane significant problems.
Paulo Thiago vs. Jacob Volkmann
Welterweight non-title Bout

Volkmann by submission round 1
I don’t like Paulo Thiago, he should be 0-2 in the UFC. Volkmann seems pretty good. I’m going with Volkmann.
Josh Koscheck vs. Anthony Johnson
Welterweight non-title bout

Johnson by KO round 2
As long as Johnson has better ground game than Cheick Kongo then he should be able to handily defeat Koshchek. If not, then he’s probably going to get wrestled and lose a decision. Koshchek will not beat Johnson on the feet though once he sees that he’s outmatched in the standup game he will undoubtedly go for the takedown. As long as Johnson can repeatedly stop Koshchek’s takedowns he will be able to stop the fight whenever he wants.
Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin
Light-Heavyweight non title bout

Ortiz by Unanimous decision or TKO round 2
If Tito is as healthy as he says he is, then this fight belongs to him. I have lost a lot of faith in Forrest after his last few fights.
Could someone tell me why Tito fought Ken Shamrock 3 times? After two wins why would you need a rubber match?
Enjoy the Fights.

I moved last weekend to my own place. Which is awesome, I love it plenty of space for me to stretch out for the trip into manhood. Unfortunately because of this I missed UFC 105, and since that was the majority of my article today this might be a short SOMMA. Who knows? Maybe I’ll get inspired and keep going only time shall tell.
According to middleeasy.com Brock has what’s called diverticulitis. To me this sounds like one of those diseases that Peter Griffin would say with his gingivitis voice. (circa season 2 I believe) Honestly though I hope he’s ok I’m not a huge Brock fan but he needs to fight in order for the UFC Heavyweight story to continue to develop. Plus death is never something I would wish on someone who merely irritates me. He has to stick around so I can hate on him some more.
So for those of you keeping count at home, Brock, Carwin, and Big Nog are all out of UFC 108. Have no fear though Silva vs. Evans is here. It is now the main event of UFC 108. It’s not a terrible main event at all I’m looking forward to this fight. However I still think Dana needs to have a talk with Mr. Rampage Jackson because at this point the UFC could use all the draws they can get. While you’re at it go get Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski too sign them to one fight contracts and let them win their way back into our hearts.
Vitor Belfort will be fighting Anderson Silva for the belt at UFC 109 or so the rumor is saying. Now he can join the ever growing list of people who aren’t ready for a title shot yet. Yes I’m talking about Dan Hardy. He barely beat Marcus Davis (I don’t really feel like he won the fight) He soundly beat Mike Swick from what I hear however I don’t even think Swick should have been fighting Hardy for the number one contender spot as we have Johnson and Koshchek fighting on Saturday. If Hardy is going to fight anyone it should be Anthony Rumble Johnson if he beats Johnson then he’s ready for GSP. Well then who is GSP going to fight Ronald? He can fight Jon Fitch. Fitch is a tough opponent who deserves a rematch as he put on a great fight with GSP in his last fight with him.
I have to point this out the welterweight division could be in trouble with these match-ups. Since Dan Hardy will be fighting for the title consider this. If Dan Hardy loses, and Swick, Koshchek, Fitch, and Alves all win their next respective fights, then who do they fight next? At this point I think they’d all have the same legitimate claim to the title shot. This may have been poor planning on someone’s part. It may be time for a UFC welterweight grand prix.
We’ve got UFC 106 coming up this week, and we’ve got WEC: Aldo vs. Brown coming up tomorrow. I love Mike Brown as he is a legitimate fighter and has looked impressive against elite opponents. However I’m picking my man Jose Aldo. I’m not even going to explain why. Why, you ask? Simple because I’ve chosen to enjoy this MMA show as a fan and not as an analyst (and because it’s tomorrow and I simply don’t have time to break down the WEC card) however, you can look forward to my picks for UFC 106 on Thursday and Friday and of course a TUF wrap up on Wednesday. Hey maybe I’ll even throw in a bonus WEC wrap up post. Who knows??? Arrrrrrggggghhhhh! All this posting is making me go postal!!!
Well that was corny.

Alright I’ve got a ton of things on my mind (including moving tomorrow to my own place yayyyy!!) and I’ve barely got a moment to speak so I’m not going to break this one down, just going to call the fight straight up.
Randy Couture vs. Brandon Vera
Light Heavyweight non-title bout

Couture TKO or unanimous decision
Don’t have time to break it down folks sorry but trust me on this one.

UFC 105 Predictions: Trap Fights
These next two main card fights are both trap fights. Mike Swick is probably one win away from a title shot. Michael Bisping is one impressive win away from redemption and fighting a top five middleweight. If either of these fighters lose it does less to help their opponents than it does to hurt them.
We’ll start with the original son of England Michael Bisping.
Michael Bisping vs. Denis Kang
Middleweight non-title bout

Bisping by split decision
Michael Bisping has humbled himself greatly since his devastating loss to Dan Henderson. In his interviews post UFC 100 we have always seen him give accolades to Henderson and to not give excuses for his loss. He’s even seen in the Countdown show poking a little fun at himself when he’s watching film on Kang. “Look he’s circling right……(turns to the camera and smiles) what kind of an idiot would do that?” I think that we’re going to get the old Bisping that is little more reckless than the one we’ve seen recently. I’m hoping that we get to see Bisping free his hands a little with the strikes and take the fight to Kang. I think that his apprehension against Henderson is what cost him and I think that if he can turn his movement forward and keep the pressure on Kang he should be able to grind out a decision. On the other hand, Kang is a hard striker and quite capable on the ground. He has the ability to end the fight whether it be in the stand up or in a submission. Kang has a chance to beat Bisping and it’s realistic. If it happens it will be in round one or two. If this fight goes to a third round it will be in Bisping’s favor.
Now this next fight has been lightly touted as the welterweight number one contender fight however I doubt this is truly the case if Dan Hardy wins.
Mike Swick vs. Dan Hardy
Welterweight non title bout

Swick by TKO
Let me first start by saying this fight shouldn’t be happening. If I were Mike Swick I would question making this the top contender fight for me as Josh Koshchek is fighting Anthony Johnson. If the UFC were really forcing the issue they’d make Koshchek fight Swick and Johnson fight Hardy. This way you put two contenders against each other and two up and comers against each other and not American Kickboxing Academy vs. the world. No one would debate that if Johnson and Hardy fought each other that they wouldn’t be ready for a top contender or even a title shot afterward. However if both these guys lose to AKA fighters we’re going to have a top contender issue in the welterweight division. Anyways, I honestly think Swick’s hands are too fast for Hardy to contend with him. After making short work of Ben Saunders which was after making even shorter work of Jonathan Goulet this is kind of a step down in competition for Swick. Not to take anything away from Dan Hardy but his performance against Marcus Davis was not impressive to me. As a matter of fact I didn’t think he won that fight as much as he landed a big knee at the right time. (I don’t want to get into the judging debate in the UFC though we’ll save that for another day) Dan Hardy is going to have to end this fight fairly quickly with a big shot against Swick. Swick will move well as he always does and land shot after shot on Hardy if that doesn’t work he won’t mind taking the fight to the ground and pounding Hardy out. Regardless I don’t see this fight going past round one. If Swick looks past Hardy (who is a very dangerous opponent) then he’s going to sleep in round one.
Main event tomorrow…..

For those of you keeping count this weekend will be free MMA show number 2 of three in less than two weeks. Last Saturday was Strikeforce on CBS, this Saturday is UFC on Spike, and next Wednesday is WEC on VS. For the paying customer there will be more MMA next Saturday on PPV. So that’s about 4 solid doses of MMA in a month, not to mention Strikeforce Challengers, Sengoku, and any other show I didn’t get a chance to check out.
Needless to say if you’re a new fan this is the perfect time to jump on board, this much free MMA doesn’t come around often.
Alright let’s have some predictions. Today’s edition of predictions will the TUF edition minus Bisping which I’ll cover tomorrow.
We’ll start in the lightweight division with…
Ross Pearson vs. Aaron Riley

Lightweight non-title bout
Ross Pearson TKO round 2 or unanimous decision
I’m not going to go into advantages on today’s predictions because I’m covering two TUF winners and I know little to nothing about them based on their competition. Based on what I’ve seen about Ross Pearson I have a feeling he’s going to attempt to push the pace and smother Riley early. I think that Riley’s experience will allow him to weather the storm in the first round. Ross Pearson is not going to let up even for a second and this will eventually lead to a TKO in round two. Even if it does go to decision I don’t see Riley having many advantages over Pearson besides experience.
James Wilks vs. Matt Brown

Welterweight non-title bout
Matt Brown TKO round 1
I think that Wilks just got a very tough opponent in Brown. This is a significant jump in competition in from Demarques Johnson. Matt Brown has been in a sense re-born in MMA as it comes to the UFC. His overall record is a somewhat spotty 10-7 however since being on the ultimate fight he has gone 3-1 in the UFC. All of his victories in the UFC have been finishes including his last two an armbar and a TKO that went much longer than it should have gone against Pete Sell. I think that Matt Brown should be able to effectively control the standup game with Wilks enough to end the fight early. I have not been impressed with any of Wilks’ fights I’ve seen and don’t think he has what it takes to defeat an opponent as tough as Brown.
We’ll go into the Bisping-Kang and Swick-Hardy fights tomorrow.

Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers roundup
Mayhem said via twitter that he didn’t train to grapple as much as he did with Shields.
I have to be frank here, that’s exactly why he lost. Anyone who fights Jake Shields and isn’t ready for a wrestling match might as well give up now.
I wasn’t impressed with the Werdum Silva fight Silva looked a lot more apprehensive than he should have and that may have cost him. I don’t think this speaks volumes for Werdum’s abilities however I think him vs. Brett Rogers would good a good test to see if he’s ready for the Overeems and Fedors of the division.
Gegard Mousasi is a good fighter. He didn’t walk through Sudoku as I expected him to, but he ground out a very good second round TKO against a solid opponent. We were able to see more versatility in his game this time around. I was happy to see that Sudoku fought as well as he did as it gave us a good barometer for Mousasi’s skills.
Looks like Fedor was who we thought he was. However I think this fight says a lot more about the weaknesses of Brett Rogers than about the strengths of Fedor. Rogers tagged Fedor with a jab early that had many folks thinking that Fedor was in trouble. This was never the case. I noticed that when Rogers had Fedor pressed against the cage with under hooks Rogers was unable to use the position to his advantage. When Rogers had Fedor on his back and was raining down punches he was almost submitted via arm bar. In the standup game Rogers was unable to use his reach to his advantage against a significantly smaller opponent.
Basically, Rogers has a lot of work to do. However he’s young and will have many other opponents to bounce back on. My only other issue is that I don’t think he’s diverse enough to become a real threat to anyone. He depends too much on his punching power and when he’s unable to secure an advantage with his hands he gets uncomfortable. (Also please get Brett Rogers a PR person he is not winning any fans with his interviews)
I guess we’ll see what happens next time.
On another note I hate watching Strikeforce broadcast fights. The color commentary is atrocious the play-by-play is suspect and the keys to the cage are redundant. I’m not saying Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg are perfect, but I’ll choose them any day over the clowns that broadcast Strikeforce.
In other news…..
Looks like Brock won’t be fighting at UFC 108 because he has mono. That’s right you heard me, MONO!! I haven’t heard anyone contracting mono since the school slut in 8th grade. Who has Brock been kissing?……..oh wait a minute, didn’t he get on top of his wife recently?
Stefan Struve just re-signed a four fight deal with the UFC. Seeing as how he is destroying bums left and right this should solidify him as a lower level gatekeeper until 2011. (I judge people who have been beat by Junior Dos Santos, not because he’s bad, but because there’s a reason he’s a contender, and they’re not)
Cung Le is back! (Such a cool name, designed to strike terror) He’ll be facing Scott Smith in December for Strikeforce evolution. I have a funny feeling that a victory there plus recent trash talk from Jake Shields after his victory over Mayhem sets up a nice Strikeforce middleweight championship sometime in February or March. I further predict that Cung Le wins the belt, then goes and does several more movies re-starting the Strikeforce trend of champions refusing to defend their titles. (Or not putting them on the line at all)
This week we have some excitement coming up, we have TUF Quarterfinals, and UFC 105. (And Pacquiao vs. Cotto but that’s not MMA lol)
I’ll start my break down of UFC 105 tomorrow. (DOWN WITH ENGLAND!! Sorry chokewho…..)

So just to continue what I was talking about on Tuesday non title Strikeforce bouts.
They’re taking a great risk here. Personally I don’t think Gegard or Fedor are going to lose however since they are at risk, I feel like something should be on the line. You don’t put such great talent on the line with no real reward for winning. If Mousasi loses, Soduku has a legitimate claim to the Strikeforce title. If Fedor loses Strikeforce is going to be hurting for money since if I’m Brett Rogers I would immediately want to renegogiate my contract. Since Allastair Overeem hasn’t defended his belt in two years why not just make this fight for the interim Heavyweight championship?
Siiiigh, mark my words this nice guy act by Scott Coker is only going to end up costing him money, heartache, and quite possibly a promotional company down the line.
In the meantime let’s talk about the Strikeforce Main event.
FEDOR “THE LAST EMPEROR” EMELIANENKO (30-1) VS BRETT “THE GRIM” ROGERS (10-0)
Heavyweight Non-Title Fight

Fedor Submission Round 2 or unanimous decision
Advantages to Rogers: Strong striking, quick hands good dirty boxing. Will be the stronger and more imposing fighter on Saturday
Advantages to Fedor: Evasive striking, good head movement. Extremely technical ground game. Experienced with larger opponents and getting out of bad situations.
Honestly I think that Fedor is going to give Brett Rogers problems that he hasn’t had before in the ring. Assuming that the Fedor camp took notes after his recent victory over Andrei Arlovski I think that the “holes” Fedor has in his game will be corrected. Brett Rogers is 10-0 if he were in the UFC I’d be more willing to testify to the authenticity of his record but he’s gotten this record by knocking out heavyweights outside the UFC. He claims that he’s going to knockout Fedor. That’s a problem, if he chases Fedor for even one round looking for the knockout cardio is going to become an issue. The chance that Rogers has to win is to knockout Fedor in the first round. If that doesn’t happen and it goes longer I think we’ll see the systematic break down of the Grim. Fedor is too experienced to get sucked into trading blows with Rogers, and more than likely will look to turn the fight into a wrestling match. Once this happens he should be able to submit Rogers fairly quickly. Fedor has always been a patient fighter and we’ll see this in action on Saturday, if the pace frustrates Rogers look for him to find ways to press the action and swing for the fences.
I can’t say whether this is going to be a good fight or not but I’m excited to see it in order to know the pecking order for Heavyweights in MMA.
